Looking further ahead though there is already a buzz building for a potential showdown between Fedor and current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, and the indications are pointing towards that bout airing on pay-per-view.
"Following this fight now we have one more fight on the cards. That's the future for now, there's one more fight following the June 26 fight and that fight is more likely than not on pay-per-view," Evgeni Kogan from the fighters management team 'M-1 Global' confirmed to MMAWeekly.
Kogan also confirmed that despite rumors to the contrary, they wouldn't stand in the way of a fight with Overeem.
"If that is what is offered, Fedor nor his management, we will not turn down fights. If that's what is offered, it's what we'll be taking."
That's good to hear, though this is M-1 Global we're talking about here so it would be wise not to go popping the champagne bottles just yet.
It's a fight that makes sense though…perhaps the only one that does if they are serious about putting on a PPV event, so it would be foolish of M-1 to refuse a fight with him.
The one loose end here is CBS. As yet no word has emerged as to whether they will hold a third Strikeforce event in the future. After the disappointing viewer ratings for the second show headlined by Dan Henderson and Jake Shields the feeling is that they'd need Fedor to be involved to make it work.
So if Strikeforce opt to put Fedor's next fight on PPV, could that mean they are burning their bridges with the network? Alternatively is it possible they are opting for PPV because CBS has already pulled the plug on them?
As always when it comes to Strikeforce, CBS and M-1 Global's dealings there are questions that remain unanswered.
