Amir Khan retains WBA light-welterweight title, LAS VEGAS, Nevada: Amir Khan used a series of combinations to the head and powerful body shots to grind out a 12-round unanimous decision over Marcos Maidana in their WBA title fight. The 23-year-old Khan on Saturday survived the toughest test of his boxing career to successfully defend his 140-pound title.
“I was hit by his best shots and I am still there,” Khan said.
“I know I made mistakes, but I worked hard and came back stronger than ever.
“He’s a strong fighter, and he hits hard. My chin was tested. I’m not taking anything away from him. He’s a great champion. I proved today I’ve got a chin.”
Khan (24-1, 17 KOs) started quickly, knocking Maidana down late in the opening round but it proved to be the lone knockdown of the fight at the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino.
The relentless Maidana (29-2) regrouped and by the 10th round he bloodied and buckled Khan’s knees, almost sending the British champion to the canvas.
Khan responded with a flurry of punches in the 11th and 12th rounds to take the fight on all three judges’ scorecards.
The Bolton fighter, who is based in California, finished the fight with blood flowing from his nose.
Judges Jerry Roth and C.J. Ross scored the bout 114-111 for Khan, and Glenn Trowbridge favoured Khan 113-112.
Maidana was not happy with the judges’ scores, saying he did enough to recover from the knockout and score points in the later rounds to earn the title.
“I thought I won it,” the Argentine fighter said. “I did enough in the final rounds but they gave him the decision.”
Maidana, who has a reputation as a dangerous and sometimes dirty fighter, had one point deducted by referee Joe Cortez in the fifth round after he tried to elbow Khan during a break in the action. The elbow missed and hit Cortez in the chest.
The 27-year-old Maidana made Khan work every round for the victory as the two brawled in the centre of the ring with very few clinches or backpeddling from either fighter.
Khan suffered his only loss in 2008 — a shocking defeat as he was knocked out by Colombia’s Breidis Prescott.
Khan, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist, said he chose to fight Maidana because he wanted to show he was prepared to go up against the toughest in his weight class.
“I made a mistake in my past now I am a different fighter thanks to (trainer) Freddie Roach,” Khan said in the ring after the fight.
Khan was fighting for just the second time in the United States. He stopped Paulie Malignaggi in the 11th round of a one-sided fight last May in New York.
Both Khan and Maidana fought Andreas Kotelnik in 2009. Maidana, who has 23 KOs in the first three rounds, had won four consecutive fights since dropping a split decision to Kotelnik in February. Just five months later, Khan beat Kotelnik in 12 rounds for the WBA title.

Pakistan cricket coach Waqar Younis on Tuesday urged his team to get back to winning ways as they begin the build-up to next year's World Cup. We haven't won anything recently and after a chaotic England tour things are becoming clearer, so if we win against South Africa and then on the New Zealand tour it will be a good build-up for the World Cup," Waqar told reporters.
Pakistan play two back-to-back Twenty20 matches on Tuesday and Wednesday, before playing five one-day internationals and two Tests – all against South Africa – before touring New Zealand.
Waqar said he hoped the three players involved in the spot-fixing scandal would be available for the World Cup, starting in February next year and jointly co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
"I hope they (three suspended players) are available to play, but at this point of time we can only hope because they are three key players and it's never easy to lose your key players," said Waqar, himself a great paceman.
"Asif and Aamer had been progressing very well but if they are not available we have replacements in mind and they will step in, like we have three good spinners who will come handy in the World Cup held in the sub-continent."
Waqar said Pakistan will use a combination of youth and experience.
"We have a blend of youth and experience and with Younis Khan coming into the squad against South Africa we have a chance to blend the team and it's always good to have experience backing up the youth," said Waqar.
"We are mindful of the preparations for the World Cup and the team is very much on course," said Waqar who was captain when Pakistan crashed out in the first round of the World Cup in South Africa seven years ago.

National cricketer Zulqarnain Haider has revealed that he had a one-to-one meeting with the person who gave him death threats.
During a press onference in London, Zulqarnain Haider admitted on Wednesday that he fled to London because the Pakistan wicketkeeper feared he and his family were in severe danger following an alleged match-fixing plot. Zulqarnain Haider revealed more about his controversial decision to quit Pakistan’s one-day series against South Africa in Dubai.
The 24-year-old repeated his claims that he had received death threats after hitting the winning runs in Friday’s fourth one-day match and explained how he had been approached to fix the result of that match and Tuesday’s fifth game. It was very hard for me when I got threats from one person in Dubai, and I just felt very nervous that he gave me threats, he said. Zulqarnain described the ultimatum he had been given, though insisted he did not know the identity of the person issuing the threat. “He said, "If you work with us, we will give you a lot of money," Zulqarnain told. “‘If (not and) you go back home, we will kill you and your family’.” Zulqarnain arrived in England on Monday and immediately claimed asylum in order to gain entry to the country. He said that this country is very humane, very co-operative, and there are very nice people here and there are very good rules here for my safety. That is why I came here. However, Zulqarnain insisted he had no intention of claiming asylum permanently, adding that I don’t want any aid from the British government. I want to be a good citizen and I am a good citizen also in Pakistan and I want to live in peace. Zulqarnain revealed he had a meeting at Pakistan’s High Commission in London on Wednesday and he said that I wish they will protect my family because I have two daughters and a wife, so I want to be safe. Zulqarnain also confirmed he had met the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit. He also thanked Dunya News for arranging a meeting with Pakistan's High Commissioner Wajid Shams ul Hassan.
