Boston Marathon

BOSTON (AP) ― Boston Marathon officials say they have heard from about two dozen competitors, including one elite runner, whose flights from Europe have been canceled because of the massive ash cloud spewing from an Icelandic volcano.

Boston Athletic Association spokesman Jack Fleming said Friday that the actual number of runners who are having trouble with their trans-Atlantic flights is probably more.

Organizers say Moroccan Abdellah Falil is stuck in Paris, and is now expected late Saturday after his flight was canceled twice. Falil competed in the 10,000 meters at the Beijing Games.

Another competitor stranded in Europe is New York City resident David Gray. The television commercial producer is in a Brussels hotel room “frustrated” that he can’t find an alternate way across the Atlantic.

The race is Monday.
