JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two of Makia Coney’s classmates at University Christian School have been arrested for her murder.
Police found her body in the woods off Powers Avenue Wednesday night. Police said she was shot in the head.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said police arrested two of her friends during a news conference early Saturday morning.
The suspects are identified as 17-year-old Charles Roy Southern and 16-year-old Connor Julian Pridgen.
Police say the two shot her, dumped her body in the woods, left her for dead and went back to University Christian.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Makia’s family,” said Lt. Larry Schmitt.
Charles Coney issued a statement on behalf of his family. He said the family is thankful for all the people who helped bring the case to an arrest.
“The healing continues for us and for our community,” added Coney. “Through the shadows of death, God has been and is sustaining us. We know that Makia is at rest.”
University Christian School also released a statement Saturday morning:
The University Christian family has been shocked by the recent developments surrounding the death of Makia Coney. We were very disappointed to learn the results of the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office investigation implicating two UC students in this crime. We continue to be in prayer for Makias family as they deal with this senseless tragedy. Our school community has already begun to support and encourage them in their time of loss.
We would like to thank the counselors from Trinity Christian Academy, Episcopal High School and The Bolles School for partnering with us as we endeavor to meet the needs of our student body.
We have and will continue to diligently cooperate with JSO detectives to bring a swift conclusion to this investigation. We appreciate all of the support received from our community and covet your prayers as we work through the death of one of our beloved students.(firstcoastnews.com)
