Gonzalez was mentioned in my previous post as an opportunity to be moved and in my opinion, this was a natural choice. Gonzalez was working as a starter in Toledo before being recalled earlier this year to serve as a long reliever for the Tigers. It has been good at times, but has struggled with the command. It is also nothing more than organizational depth at the Tigers are concerned.
With the big club and do not compete for the position of the season, Gonzalez was simply blocking other young arms to get much-needed large inputs of the league. I hope he is not claimed and the end of the season, near Toledo, the Tigers simply go to release him.
The biggest news is that an unknown team has claimed DH Johnny Damon, who was placed on waivers last week by the Tigers. Detroit has 48 hours to develop a trade with the claiming team. If no agreement is reached, Detroit can opt out Damon and retain their services for the rest of the year, or it could simply let go and allow the team say they have Damon, together with the balance of his contract.
Jon Heyman, meanwhile, believes the Tigers will let you go if Damon cannot make a trade. By custom, usually do not agree with Heyman, but this time is different. The Tigers have nothing to play and Wells, meanwhile, could use the bats. That said, the Tigers also have a responsibility to their fans to put a quality product on the field.
Wells can get his at-bats with the intake to those who have lately given to Don Kelly. I know that Kelly has been hot, but again, not a long-term solution for the Tigers. If Damon is maintained, the Tigers have better training, no doubt about that. But with or without Damon, the Tigers will finish third.
Hopefully, Detroit can throw an idea or two in exchange for Damon. Salary dumps are not very fun to write.
*** UPDATE: According to several reports, Boston Red Sox are the team awarded the claim of Damon. Boston is a need in the gardens that Damon could fill no doubt, but there's a complication. Damon has a no-trade clause in his contract, which includes the Red Sox, so it has the power to nix a deal to them.
In fact, Damon has not only veto power over the transfer to the Red Sox, you can also lock a complaint directly to the surrender to them, and so if Damon does not choose to go to Boston, the Tigers will have to stay with him. This still does not seem like a terrible idea to me anyway. At least the next 48 hours should be interesting. Stay tuned …
