It was a race that we have trained hard for and looking to better PBs and achieve Marathoner status.

The Full Marathoner Sunbirds gathered at McCafe Orchard, while the Half Marathoners RV'ed at VivoCity. Lots of excitement in the air, along with the Christmas Lighting along Orchard Road and the promise of Universal Tours in Sentosa, made for a nice setting to this year-end marathon mission. Lots of cheers and shouts as the Sunbird Marathoners arrive, with many group snaps and handshakes of encouragement.

We walked as a group to the start line, making 'noise' along the way, guided by the leaders' whistle blows. Good that we assembled early, for soon, the sound of the horn for start were blown. Our various Sunbird Pacers were lined up with the respective participants, and execution of the pace went according to plan. There were also the Official Marathon Pacers we used as guideposts as we meandered through the many turns around the city area. The weather was cool for the first 2 hours, but then the challenges were thrown in from there.

Salomon has been one of my best choices when I started to perform Adventure Racing and trail running back in early 2000.

The current XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX and XT Wings has performed extremely well for all my trainings and races. What I enjoy most about Salomon footwear is its stability and performance level. It is built with a low platform that provides top-notch trail feel and unparalleled stability. I have used them in the Multi Days Abu Dhabi Adventure Race and North Face 100 in Singapore for the past 2 years. I also had no issue in using it to run up and down the Sabah Climbathon.

Early this year, I was fortunate to be the first few in Singapore to run with their top range racing shoe – Salomon S-LAB 2. It is one of the best shoes I have ever worn all these years from Salomon for racing. Well cushioned and certainly light on weight, you can easily fly with it when going downhill. It certainly causes less fatigue to your leg when you are going for the distance.

Salomon's trail shoes have never once failed to impress me since the day I owned one myself. The shoes are famous in its top-rated materials and technologies that are well-built and catered for miles and miles of adventure running. Salomon has consistently launch numerous models of running footwear catering to different runners' needs and wants, and 'til today, I have worn many other models for different running purposes.

Friends of mine that purchased and ran with the S-LAB 2 were all very impressed with the shoe for its stability and good rear cushion. This shoe is good for both road and trail. What it can look to improve is its cushioning in the front which some of them found too thin on the trail. I found it alright though.

One of the greatest aspects of Salomon shoes is its overall stability. This is due to the low-profile nature of the 3D Chassis, which spreads your weight across a wide and low platform which also contributes to pronation support and forefoot protection.

I have been using the S-LAB 2 for races since Feb 2010. I have used it in 2 adventure races in Singapore and a 30km off road running race in Malaysia's native forest with much comfort and support. There was no issue in water drainage from the shoe after crossing each water point – a crucial feature which prevents you from carrying extra weight.

As for the upcoming Salomon X-Trail run, a good pair of trail shoes is necessary for you to tackle the trail at Macritchie Reservoir. Some of the paths can be quite rocky and certainly you will need a trail shoe to prevent too much lateral movement while you are negotiating corner and turns.

If you would like to run comfortable in the race I would suggest you start your training now. Get into the trail and feel the fun on the trail.

This week, Ian Poulter will look to successfully defend his Barclays Singapore Open title after he became the first winner of it when it was a European Tour event. Despite only being on the Asian Tour for years prior to 2009, its large prize fund has attracted many big name players in the past such as Phil Mickleson, Angel Cabrera, Rory Mcilroy and Padraig Harrington.

Judging from past history, the competition looks to be wide open with top stars and players who struggle to get their tour card doing well. I am going to base a lot of my research on last year's competition and decide from the information I gather what type of players I am looking for. I feel that length will be important this week, as will greens in regulation. Scoring was high last year with ten under winning the event so players who are? perhaps not the greatest of putters might stand a chance this week. After weighing up my options, these are the players I have come up with.

Seung-Yul Noh each way @ 28/1

Noh really is a fantastic golfer. There has been a lot of talk about the future and what players will hold the game together and Noh has been undeservedly overshadowed by players like Rory Mcilroy, Matteo Mannassero, Ryo Ishikawa, Anthony Kim and Rickie Fowler. I say undeserved because Noh is more than able to hold his own against players of this present and potential quality. Noh certainly has the length averaging over three hundred yards in driving distance, reinforcing that he's long enough for any course. As for his GIR stats, he hits 66.83% of greens but despite this not being near the leaders of the European Tour, it is still an impressive stat and one that fits into the description of the player we are looking for. At 28/1, Noh is well worth backing.

Joost Luiten each way @ 50/1

I am absolutely delighted to get such a good player at such high odds. He isn't that long a player, averaging nearly 290 yards off the tee but he is still a good driver of the ball hitting many fairways in regulation but it's his GIR stats that are the most impressive. He hits over 70% of greens which is extremely impressive. The real clincher as to why to pick Joost this week though is his form in the last three events, finishing T2nd, T3rd and T5th. in addition, he may not have won on the European Tour before but he is a two time winner on the Challenge Tour, which is sure to give him some vital experience of how to get over the winning line.

Charl Schwartzel each way @ 22/1

In a gruesome battle for my third tip Schwartzel had to fend off stiff competition from Aussie Adam Scot and defending champion Ian Poulter. The man's long, he's strong and hopefully he's going to get his A-game going. Schwartzel drives the ball nearly 295 yards and hits a good amount of fairways to boot. In terms of GIR, he hits a huge 71.69% of greens and if this wasn't enough of a reason for you to back Charl, then factor into the equation that he has had two wins already on tour this year. A tied sixteenth last week was not something to be sniffed at considering the field that was present. Prior to that, Schwartzel recorded two top tens in three events so his game should be in good form coming into this week. At 22/1 the South African is worth it.

Although not an official tip, I'd just like to mention one other player and that is Richie Ramsay. He hits a lot of GIR and even though he is quite short, he is very accurate and precise. Last week he recorded his biggest ever cheque of over �50,000 by finishing third in the WGC-HSBC Champions. As well as that, he has already won on tour this year. At 80/1, Ramsay is very tempting but just didn't make it into my top 3 this week.

James' View: Some very interesting tips from Ian this week. After the disappointment of last week, I think Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer will be back contending this week as the Race of Dubai draws to a close. However, such are their odds, I don't think there is any real value in me recommending them. So, Im going to stick with one of Ians tips, Joost Luiten (50/1) and add another rank outsider to that list, Gareth Maybin at 80/1. I was impressed with his form a few weeks ago in Valderrama and although he finished in nervous fashion, Im hoping the experience might stand him in good stead. At 80/1, he looks grossly overpriced and having not played last week, he should be rested. My third man, and probably my top tip for this week, is Richard Green @ 28/1. Unlike Ian, I think driving accuracy is going to be more important than length and on these Bermuda greens, I am actually looking for decent putters. Green fits the bill nicely and having won recently, confidence and form are a given. It is quite amazing that a talent like Richard Green has not won more often on Tour but perhaps his latest win, despite stumbling over the final few holes, will spur him on to greater things. With odds of 28/1, I think he represents good value and with that being said, he gets my each way bet.

Registration was 70% capacity when I logged on one hour after opening. I guess it must be due to the fact that there are very limited IM races in Asia Pacific next year.

After conferring with coach yesterday, we established the following:

* Recommend 6 months training for the full IM. I was eyeing IM China (if it takes off), but since I can’t start training till mid Jan, it wouldn’t work out with just 4 months. As coach said, it can be done within 4 months, but I’ll suffer just to finish.

* 3 months of base building, and 3 months of race-specific speedwork

* 250km of cycling per week on average, over 4 rides. Peak of about 350km per week

* Run distance average 40km per week

* Aim for LD triathlon Korea in mid July 2011. Should have sufficient time to train up for IMWA

* Importance of base building reiterated. Most people suffer on IM races because of insufficient base building

After the series, Vettori had said it was “probably the lowest point in New Zealand cricket for a long, long time. To stare down 4-0 is incredibly disappointing and something that will stay with us. We have to recover from it pretty quickly, otherwise people will be pretty desolate about New Zealand cricket.”

The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the main stadium of the Delhi Games, the Jawaharlal Nehru.

Seventy two countries including a strong contingent from host nation India will battle for glory in this 12-day event scheduled to be concluded on October 14.

The stage is 80 feet by 40 feet, encircled by a 30-foot area, which will host the 45-minute cultural extravaganza showcasing the best of Indian diversity and culture.

For the first time in the history of the CWG, the athletes will march into the stadium during the opening segment of the ceremony after which they will take their seats to enjoy the ceremony.

The Queen's Baton will arrive at the stadium completing its' 170,000km journey across the 72 Commonwealth nations and territories. The Baton will be received by HRH Prince of Wales who will read the Queen's message,

which ends with the opening of the Games. The event has been troubled by a series of issues and was highly criticised by many countries. India has had to overcome many obstacles including bad weather, the withdrawal of top athletes, preparation delays, a shooting near the stadium and the ever present threat of an attack by terrorists according to security experts in charge of security at the Games. However, with the participating teams finally agreeing to take part, the Games are expected to begin on schedule.

Ostensibly, Magic wants to have a bigger role as an owner, just like his buddy Michael Jordan. However, he's not getting that with the Lakers, so he needs to move on and get some shares of another team. And you thought Magic was just going to sit back and be an impartial ESPN journalist. Latest News Update About Kamari Charlton, Kamari Charlton Faces Caning in Singapore: Kamari Charlton was arrested on Sept 1 when he attempted to leave the city-state 169 days after his 90-day social visit pass expired, his lawyer M. Ravi said. Mr Charlton, who was born in the Bahamas and owns a construction company there, was in Singapore while his wife received medical care for pregnancy complications, Mr Ravi said. It was not clear why Mr Charlton and his wife chose Singapore for medical treatment.

Staying in Singapore for more than 90 days after the end of a visa is punishable with a maximum jail term of six months and at least three cane strokes.

The Attorney General's office declined to comment on the case. A judge is to meet with lawyers from both sides in a pretrial conference on Friday.

If found guilty, Mr Charlton would be the first American citizen caned in Singapore since 1994, when teenager Michael Fay was punished for vandalism.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner confirmed Mr Charlton's detention. He told reporters the case was still in pre-trial status and was being closely monitored by the U.S. Embassy which was providing consular assistance.

Asked about caning, Mr Toner said: "Well, we feel it's not an appropriate form of punishment. This is something we've made clear in our human rights report and also something we've conveyed to the government of Singapore in our bilateral discussions."

The Southeast Asian country boasts one of the lowest violent crime rates and highest standards of living in the world, but human rights groups often criticise the government for severe punishments, such as a mandatory death penalty for drug traffickers. Singapore also reiterated a ban on the sale of chewing gum and announced a crackdown on littering this year.

Earlier this year, Oliver Fricker of Switzerland was sentenced to five months in jail and three cane strokes for breaking into a train depot with an accomplice and spray painting subway cars. Fricker later appealed his sentence and a judge added two months to his jail term.

Sri Lanka Moves Ahead Of India in ODI Rankings

With the countdown towards the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 reaching the 100-day mark, Sri Lanka has laid down a marker to the other 13 teams by claiming second place in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI championship after a confidence-boosting series win over table-topper Australia. Sri Lanka won the series opener in Melbourne by one wicket and then took an unassailable 2-0 lead by winning the Sydney ODI by 29 runs (D-L method). Australia secured a consolation win in Brisbane where it won by eight wickets.

As such, Sri Lanka's first-ever series win in Australia has earned it three ratings points which has put it one point clear of India on 118 ratings points and 10 points behind number-one ranked Australia which has conceded two ratings points.

India will have the chance to regain the number-two position later this month but to make it happen it will have to win all the five ODIs against New Zealand. That series will start in Guwahati on November 28.

A 5-0 clean sweep will take India to 121 ratings points while a 4-1 series win will put it alongside Sri Lanka on 118 rating points. However, in that case Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side would be placed just behind Kumar Sangakkara's side by a fraction of a ratings point.

Sri Lanka's next ODI commitment is the five-match ODI series against the West Indies which starts in Suriyawewa Stadium in Hambantota on December 9.

Meanwhile, South Africa and Pakistan have retained their pre-series positions after the Proteas won the just-concluded series in the UAE 3-2. South Africa is on 115 ratings points, two ahead of England, while Pakistan is on 100 ratings points and leads New Zealand by four ratings points.

Pakistan beat China by 128 runs. National cricket team captain Khalid  Latif  scored the event's first century. Latif's unbeaten 103 helped  Pakistan to win the game.

Tiger Woods Vows To Make Strong Comeback

After a tumultuous year that included a sex scandal, divorce and a  shortened, winless season on the PGA Tour, Tiger Woods said Tuesday that  he’s continuing to improve his game and his life.

“As a golfer I learned so much more this year than any other year, and  as a person infinitely more,” Woods said after practicing for the  Chevron World Challenge, an 18-player tournament at Sherwood Country  Club in Thousand Oaks that benefits Woods’ charities.

“So it’s been a very successful year even though it was a very  painful year as well,” said Woods, 34, a winner of 14 major  championships who’s made major changes to his golf swing to help him win  again.

Woods has won the Chevron World Challenge four times but has missed the  tournament the last two years. He was recovering from knee surgery in  2008, and last year he withdrew because the event came only days after  his Thanksgiving night car accident in Florida that set in motion his  sensational sex scandal. Woods also lost golf’s No. 1 ranking — a  position he held for more than five consecutive years — last month when  Lee Westwood of England took the top spot.

The AFC Asian Cup 2011 gets underway on Friday evening and hosts Qatar will be aiming for a victorious start to the event.
