Hopes are high that, after frantic 11th-hour lobbying from the “Three Lions” of David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham, England could repeat the same warm glow that covered the nation on winning the 2012 Olympics for London. Insiders suggested those hopes were boosted yesterday by the Russian president’s decision to stay away from the discussions and one bookmaker went as far as to put England last-minute 11-10 favourites.
Vladimir Putin, whose country was the early favourite to win, described the lobbying as “an obvious campaign… unleashed against members of the FIFA executive committee”.
