LAHORE: Shahid Afridi has been appointed Pakistan captain for the World Twenty20 in West Indies, Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Nadeem Sarwar announced here Tuesday. Afridi had been fined 3 million rupees ($35,200) by the PCB for ball tampering during the one-day series against Australia earlier this year, but the legspinning allrounder was awarded the highest central contract from the organization last week.
Pakistan selected its 15-player squad earlier this month but had delayed picking the captain.
The tournament runs from April 30 to May 16. Pakistan is in Group A with Australia and Bangladesh.
Veteran middle-order batsman Misbah-ul-Haq, all-rounder Abdul Razzaq and opener Salman Butt were also believed to be in the run for captaincy.
