PCB Committee Submits Report on Zulqarnain

Pakistani officials submitted a report Monday into former wicket-keeper Zulqarnain Haider’s dramatic escape to London, abandoning his team ahead of a match with South Africa, the cricket board said. The 24-year-old fled the team hotel in Dubai on the morning of the fifth and final one-day against South Africa on November 8, claiming he received death threats from unknown people to influence the results of matches.

After flying into London, Zulqarnain retired from international cricket and sought asylum in Britain.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) terminated his contract and formed a three-man committee, headed by team manager Intikhab Alam, to establish the facts surrounding Haider’s disappearance.

The committee finalised and submitted its report to the PCB, the PCB said, declining to make any further comment Monday.

Team security manager Khawaja Najam and PCB official Subhan Ahmed were the other two members of the committee.

On Sunday, Haider posted a message on Facebook, threatening to name several players in the next five days who took money to fix matches.

His family in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore have told local media that they received death threats.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said its anti-corruption staff met Haider in London and offered support to the former wicket-keeper.

Haider faces severe punishment for violating ICC ethics by not telling the council he was asked to influence match results for money.

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt says the Board’s decision on the Haider affair will be based on the committee’s report.

Several former players criticised Haider for merely trying to get political asylum in Britain.

Before arriving at the hotel, we were curious to see how they were going to fit ping pong tables into the ADCB lounge which is just off to the left of the entrance. Well, somehow they managed to squeeze two tables in there, with the second table ending just before the bar. These aren’t the kind of tables found in your parents’ basement. These are thick, sturdy, professional ping pong tables.

And playing on them, were a few professional ping pong players including Wally Green who boasted that he sometimes uses his Blackberry as a paddle.

It was a culmination of the 12-week Ops Sunbird training program, and the Sunbirds being put through the final test. It was a race that we have trained hard for and looking to better PBs and achieve Marathoner status.

The Full Marathoner Sunbirds gathered at McCafe Orchard, while the Half Marathoners RV'ed at VivoCity. Lots of excitement in the air, along with the Christmas Lighting along Orchard Road and the promise of Universal Tours in Sentosa, made for a nice setting to this year-end marathon mission. Lots of cheers and shouts as the Sunbird Marathoners arrive, with many group snaps and handshakes of encouragement.

We walked as a group to the start line, making 'noise' along the way, guided by the leaders' whistle blows. Good that we assembled early, for soon, the sound of the horn for start were blown. Our various Sunbird Pacers were lined up with the respective participants, and execution of the pace went according to plan. There were also the Official Marathon Pacers we used as guideposts as we meandered through the many turns around the city area. The weather was cool for the first 2 hours, but then the challenges were thrown in from there.

Salomon has been one of my best choices when I started to perform Adventure Racing and trail running back in early 2000.

The current XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX and XT Wings has performed extremely well for all my trainings and races. What I enjoy most about Salomon footwear is its stability and performance level. It is built with a low platform that provides top-notch trail feel and unparalleled stability. I have used them in the Multi Days Abu Dhabi Adventure Race and North Face 100 in Singapore for the past 2 years. I also had no issue in using it to run up and down the Sabah Climbathon.

Early this year, I was fortunate to be the first few in Singapore to run with their top range racing shoe – Salomon S-LAB 2. It is one of the best shoes I have ever worn all these years from Salomon for racing. Well cushioned and certainly light on weight, you can easily fly with it when going downhill. It certainly causes less fatigue to your leg when you are going for the distance.

Salomon's trail shoes have never once failed to impress me since the day I owned one myself. The shoes are famous in its top-rated materials and technologies that are well-built and catered for miles and miles of adventure running. Salomon has consistently launch numerous models of running footwear catering to different runners' needs and wants, and 'til today, I have worn many other models for different running purposes.

Friends of mine that purchased and ran with the S-LAB 2 were all very impressed with the shoe for its stability and good rear cushion. This shoe is good for both road and trail. What it can look to improve is its cushioning in the front which some of them found too thin on the trail. I found it alright though.

One of the greatest aspects of Salomon shoes is its overall stability. This is due to the low-profile nature of the 3D Chassis, which spreads your weight across a wide and low platform which also contributes to pronation support and forefoot protection.

I have been using the S-LAB 2 for races since Feb 2010. I have used it in 2 adventure races in Singapore and a 30km off road running race in Malaysia's native forest with much comfort and support. There was no issue in water drainage from the shoe after crossing each water point – a crucial feature which prevents you from carrying extra weight.

As for the upcoming Salomon X-Trail run, a good pair of trail shoes is necessary for you to tackle the trail at Macritchie Reservoir. Some of the paths can be quite rocky and certainly you will need a trail shoe to prevent too much lateral movement while you are negotiating corner and turns.

If you would like to run comfortable in the race I would suggest you start your training now. Get into the trail and feel the fun on the trail.

2nd T-20: Pakistan Win Toss Again, Batting Vs SAfrica

Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi won the toss and elected to bat against South Africa in the second Twenty20 international at Zayed International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. Both the teams will remain unchanged today.

Johan Botha leads South Africa in the two consecutive Twenty20s, after which Graeme Smith takes over as skipper for the five one-day internationals and two tests.

This week, Ian Poulter will look to successfully defend his Barclays Singapore Open title after he became the first winner of it when it was a European Tour event. Despite only being on the Asian Tour for years prior to 2009, its large prize fund has attracted many big name players in the past such as Phil Mickleson, Angel Cabrera, Rory Mcilroy and Padraig Harrington.

Judging from past history, the competition looks to be wide open with top stars and players who struggle to get their tour card doing well. I am going to base a lot of my research on last year's competition and decide from the information I gather what type of players I am looking for. I feel that length will be important this week, as will greens in regulation. Scoring was high last year with ten under winning the event so players who are? perhaps not the greatest of putters might stand a chance this week. After weighing up my options, these are the players I have come up with.

Seung-Yul Noh each way @ 28/1

Noh really is a fantastic golfer. There has been a lot of talk about the future and what players will hold the game together and Noh has been undeservedly overshadowed by players like Rory Mcilroy, Matteo Mannassero, Ryo Ishikawa, Anthony Kim and Rickie Fowler. I say undeserved because Noh is more than able to hold his own against players of this present and potential quality. Noh certainly has the length averaging over three hundred yards in driving distance, reinforcing that he's long enough for any course. As for his GIR stats, he hits 66.83% of greens but despite this not being near the leaders of the European Tour, it is still an impressive stat and one that fits into the description of the player we are looking for. At 28/1, Noh is well worth backing.

Joost Luiten each way @ 50/1

I am absolutely delighted to get such a good player at such high odds. He isn't that long a player, averaging nearly 290 yards off the tee but he is still a good driver of the ball hitting many fairways in regulation but it's his GIR stats that are the most impressive. He hits over 70% of greens which is extremely impressive. The real clincher as to why to pick Joost this week though is his form in the last three events, finishing T2nd, T3rd and T5th. in addition, he may not have won on the European Tour before but he is a two time winner on the Challenge Tour, which is sure to give him some vital experience of how to get over the winning line.

Charl Schwartzel each way @ 22/1

In a gruesome battle for my third tip Schwartzel had to fend off stiff competition from Aussie Adam Scot and defending champion Ian Poulter. The man's long, he's strong and hopefully he's going to get his A-game going. Schwartzel drives the ball nearly 295 yards and hits a good amount of fairways to boot. In terms of GIR, he hits a huge 71.69% of greens and if this wasn't enough of a reason for you to back Charl, then factor into the equation that he has had two wins already on tour this year. A tied sixteenth last week was not something to be sniffed at considering the field that was present. Prior to that, Schwartzel recorded two top tens in three events so his game should be in good form coming into this week. At 22/1 the South African is worth it.

Although not an official tip, I'd just like to mention one other player and that is Richie Ramsay. He hits a lot of GIR and even though he is quite short, he is very accurate and precise. Last week he recorded his biggest ever cheque of over �50,000 by finishing third in the WGC-HSBC Champions. As well as that, he has already won on tour this year. At 80/1, Ramsay is very tempting but just didn't make it into my top 3 this week.

James' View: Some very interesting tips from Ian this week. After the disappointment of last week, I think Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer will be back contending this week as the Race of Dubai draws to a close. However, such are their odds, I don't think there is any real value in me recommending them. So, Im going to stick with one of Ians tips, Joost Luiten (50/1) and add another rank outsider to that list, Gareth Maybin at 80/1. I was impressed with his form a few weeks ago in Valderrama and although he finished in nervous fashion, Im hoping the experience might stand him in good stead. At 80/1, he looks grossly overpriced and having not played last week, he should be rested. My third man, and probably my top tip for this week, is Richard Green @ 28/1. Unlike Ian, I think driving accuracy is going to be more important than length and on these Bermuda greens, I am actually looking for decent putters. Green fits the bill nicely and having won recently, confidence and form are a given. It is quite amazing that a talent like Richard Green has not won more often on Tour but perhaps his latest win, despite stumbling over the final few holes, will spur him on to greater things. With odds of 28/1, I think he represents good value and with that being said, he gets my each way bet.
