Then an injured right ankle sent Mathews into the locker room on a cart Sunday, late in the first quarter of San Diego's home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Mathews, who had 55 yards on seven touches, jogged back onto the field in the second quarter. But he hasn't played since he was driven backwards on a tackle, injuring the ankle. The rookie rushed five times for 26 yards (5.2 yards per carry) and caught two passes for 29 yards.
