Latest Update News About Amir khan: 140lb WBA champion Amir Khan is perhaps the most talented fighter to have come out of the UK since the flamboyant Prince Naseem Hamed. The 23 year old Muslim fighter is a former Olympic silver medalist and chief sparring partner to pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao. Khan has a potent mixture of speed, skill and power that caught the attention of premier trainer Freddie Roach and Golden Boy Promotions, and is now set to take on top ranked Americans in his HBO debut this saturday.
Khan faces the motor mouthed Paulie Malignaggi, a skilled but light punching former champion from New York in a defense of his WBA title.
Stylistically, the fight shouldn't be too much of a problem for Khan. Malignaggi is fast, but not as fast as Khan, and he is skilled, but not as skilled as Khan. Basically, everything Malignaggi can do, Khan does better.
Malignaggie does however, have a world class chin and a world class heart. He has gone the distance with Miguel Cotto and faced down some extremely tough opponents that have taken him into deep water. While Khan may have heart, he is fragile in the beard department and could still be rocked by the relatively feather fisted Malignaggi.
Under Roach though, Khan has developed as a fighter immensely. After being dramatically KO'ed by the unknown Brandeis Prescott two years ago Khan dropped his then trainer and moved out to L.A to train out of the Wild Card. Apparently, many in the gym were skeptical of Khan's abilities as a fighter until he took part in toe to toe wars with Manny Pacquiao and other ferocious prospects that pushed him to the limit.
Khan has been on a four fight win streak since the loss, showing improved defense and a more considered approach to offense.? He has also picked up a world title along the way. Although Khan has not faced the best 140lbers in the world, he is a legitimate champion and certainly the most talented in the division. The fight against Malignaggi is designed to show case the best of Khan without taking too many risks Malignaggi will pose him some problems, but Khan's speed and power should prove decisive and he will likely emerge victorious after 12 rather one sided rounds.
Khan has promised to put a beating on Malignaggi after comments were made about Manny Pacquiao taking illegal drugs and insinuating that other Wild Card Gym fighters were 'on something', so it promises to be an exciting affair. Khan always comes to fight and Malignaggi will most likely oblige. If Khan looks impressive, I would wager that he'll be lined up for a fight against fellow 140lb titlist Timothy Bradley, a speedy volume puncher with comparable talent.
The fight will be broadcast live this Saturday at 9.45 ET on HBO. Make sure to tune in.
