Indsey Jacobellis Pictures, Latest News updates, Lindsey, a snowboarder from Stratton, Vermont, made her first Olympic appearance at the 2006 Games in Turin (Torino). She grew up in rural Roxbury, Connecticut with her older brother, Ben, who introduced her to snowboarding. She graduated from the Stratton Mountain School in 2003. She was the 2004 World Cup overall champion in snowboardcross (SBX), going undefeated for the entire season. She was nominated for "Sportswoman of the Year" by the Women's Sports Foundation in 2004. She is the 2005 World and U.S. National champion in SBX. She is also a three-time SBX Winter X Games gold medalist (2003-2005).
She gained a lot of publicity through the ubiquitous Visa Check Card commercials that aired on television during the months before the 2006 Winter Olympics.
In the finals of the inaugural women's snowboard cross event, she had a 3-second lead over her nearest challenger, Tanja Frieden of Switzerland, with two jumps remaining. On the penultimate jump, she did a "backside method grab" where she reached down with her left hand to grab the board while she twisted her lower body 60 degrees to the right. This halfpipe move was unnecessary because there are no style points involved in snowboard cross. The move caused her to land off-balance. She fell onto her back and skidded off the course. As she got back on her feet, Frieden overtook her and won the gold medal easily. Lindsey managed to hold onto the silver medal. The jump and crash became one of the most replayed shots during the middle weekend of the Olympics. Lindsey did not try to hide from the media scrutiny. She spoke to the NBC reporter immediately after the race. She also spoke with Bob Costas in the studio later that day where she admited to making a mistake.
She enjoys wakeboarding, riding her ATV on her family's property in Vermont, playing the piano and teaching little kids how to snowboard.
