Ghana Versus Uruguay

ghana versus uruguayUruguay are through. Great game. It was in Ghana's hands but the usually reliable Gyan missed the penalty in extra time. Uruguay 3 Ghana 2 Adiyiah misses (saved) Uruguay 3 Ghana 2 Periera misses Uruguay 3 Ghana 2 Mensah misses (saved) Uruguay 3 Ghana 2 Uruguay 2 Ghana 2 Uruguay 2 Ghana 1 Uruguay 1 Ghana 1 I wonder if both teams have the same god?

Uruguay 1 Ghana 0

Uruguay to kick first

So one has to assume Gyan is one of the 5 but how do you rebound from that?

What an ending and we haven't gotten to the dramatic part yet

So we are down to penalties. Gyan must feel terrible as he could have won it but his effort hit the cross bar.

122:00 Let me try and recap. Free kick comes in and Ghana have two chances to put in the back of the net. The second was punched out by a defender so he gets a red card.. PENALTY but GYAN MISSES!!!

121:00 WHAT JUST HAPPENED????

120:00 – Ghana win a free kick in a dangerous position on the side level with the box.

118:00 – Boateng goes ever so close from a latched on header but his effort is wide. Ghana have been the fresher and more dangerous team in extra time.

116:00 Atmosphere at the bar is intense as alternating cheers of GHANA and the URUGUAY go off for a minute and i don't think any of them are from either country.

115:00 – End to end stuff as a Uruguayan defenders falling nudge almost goes in his own net.

114:00 Uruguay counter quickly and the ball falls to Forlan but his shot is high and wide.

113:00 – Appiah reminds us of his younger days as he controls beautifully on his chest in the 6 yard box but he is closed down quickly and cannot get a shot off.

112:00 What will happen first…penalties or my laptop running out of juice!

110:00 Ghana working the ball nicely by Gyan's header from an Appiah cross is too high

107:00 Gyan tries desperately to latch onto a long ball but his first touch is a little far and it goes out for a goal kick.

Second half of extra time is under way

105:00 Both team are exhausted and committing silly fouls.

103:00 – Uruguay claim a penalty but the effort was more of a theatrical dive. The Uruguayan forward had enough athletic skill to look at the referee when he was in mid air.

98:00 – Gyan stumbles his way into the box with ball but is tackled while shooting. No penalty though. Good call i think.

And we're off. I'm now sitting perched up on the top of a booth. Not the most comfortable but i have a clear view of the TV.

Fulltime. 30 minutes of extra footie

3 minutes of added time.

90:00 Extra time looms as Ghana win a corner.

84:00 – Forlan is released but his first touch fails him and Kingson grabs it. Exciting end this!

81:00 – A long and slightly illegal looking throw from Pantsil results in a Ghanian corner. From it Uruguay break but the shot is woefully high and over.

78:00 – Chants of Kingson Kingson KINGSON, echo around the bar as he makes another spectacular save.

73:00 Gyan tries an audacious shot of a rebound but its well saved by Muslera.

71:00 Kingson saves the day again as Suarez is clean through but his shot is parried over by the Ghanian keeper.

63:00 Suarez comes close to adding to his goal tally but his volleyed effort hits the side netting.

58:00 – Ghana come back though and and force a fine save from Muslera.

55:00 GOOOOOOAAAAAL Forlan scores a gorgeous free kick. Up and over the wall and nothing Kingson could do. Apparently there are loads of Uruguayan fans here! Ghana 1 Uruguay 1

54:00 – Both teams playing counter attacking football. Midfield be damned!

50:00 Ghana then claim to have one from a handball. All right everything is now equal again!

48:00 Uruguay have a claim for a penalty but the ref waves play on.

47:00 – Well the bar is getting packed. I can barely see…thi sis annoying but the sandwich was good. Eating mac and cheese now. Oh and the game is back on.

and thats half

46:00 GOOOOOOAALLLLL Muntari takes a 40 plus yard shot that is always swerving and lands in the corner of the net. Take that Jubalani. Covered in pork loin! Ghana 1 Uruguay 0

45:00 Kevin Prince Boatent and? his matt barnesesque neck tattoos just tries a spectacular bicycle kick that goes just over the bar…very impressive.

44:00 Pork loin sandwich just arrived…brb

43:00 Well in super slo mo that looks like that hurt! Fucile just jumped very high, missed the ball and knocked himself out.

41:00 Uruguay try a training ground free kick but Forlan's "pass" was too long and it was wasted

35:00 – It's Ghana's turn to grab a bit of momentum as they put Uruguay on the back foot a bit.

30:00 – Best chance for Ghana as Vorsah rises high for a header and sends it it inches wide. Moments later, Gyan one times a cross inches wide of the opposite post. Ghana waking up.

26:00 Kingson certainly keeping the black stars in this as he saves from a Suarez thunderbolt.

17:00 All Uruguay in this game as they win their upteenth corner. Kingson does well to prevent an own goal as the ball ricochets off one of his defenders.

16:00 Bar is heavily rooting for Ghana which is fun except for one man with a booming voice that keeps screaming out KINGSON!

14:00 Kingson decides to punch a free kick instead of catching it. It goes up in the air but there is a moment of confusion where he had no idea where it was. Second time is the charm though and he holds it safely in his hands.

12:00 Suarez tries his luck but his shot is directly at Kingson

10:00 – Kingson comes out to gather a long clearance from his Uruguayan counterpart. He does a good job of marshaling his area.

5:00 On an unrelated note but to do with world competition. LETS GO ZEITGEIST. Bay area's loveliest and most wonderful Womens ultimate team who will be competing in Prague in the World Ultimate Frisbee Championships this upcoming week!

4:00 – Ghana's uniforms are spectacular…just saying!

3:00 – Uruguay already on the offensive. Can Kingson keep up his good form?

TWEEEET we're off.

We have relocated and are now at the Phoenix. I would have stayed at Danny Coyles, but I was offered a ride home and a third BM loomed. Instead, am sipping on a Guinness and trying to decide between the steak sandwich and the steak sandwich.

Welcome to the second quarterfinal, Uruguay versus Ghana. Uruguay are favored but all neutrals have got be rooting for the west African nation. They played an organized game against the US, and I personally feel didn't play that well (compared to their game against Germany and Serbia). Credit to the USMNT for disrupting them, but their finishing and composure on the ball outclassed the US's.
